Where Did It Come From?

A. MILITARY DEFENSE BEGINNINGS 1. Called ARPANet (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) a. Early 1970s b. Designed to be a communications network which would be minimally affected by destruction of any particular node 2. Some nodes located at major universities B. RESEARCH & EDUCATION 1. Evolved into a communications channel among contractors, military personnel and university researchers who were contributing to ARPA projects 2. Merged with NSFNet (National Science Foundation Network) a. NSF took charge in late 1980s b. Became known as "Internet" C. COMMERCIAL & GENERAL PUBLIC USE 1. 1991 - U.S. High Performance Computing Act 2. NREN - (National Research & Educational Network) 3. Goal - to develop and maintain high-speed networks for research and education, and to investigate commercial uses for the internet 4. Today, commercial sector is by far the mose rapidly growing area, comprising about two-thirds of the entire internet population
